Royston Town Guide
Royston area is located on the northern slopes of the Chalk Downs, just 43 miles north of central London. The town is at the crossroads of the A10 and A505 roads. It is also located close to the A1(M) and M11 motorways. The town's population is approximately 15781. It was the home of an Augustinian priory founded by Ralph de Rochester, the Elector Palatine. The Augustinian priory began as a chapel but quickly grew to include seven regular canons. The town also had two hospitals, a monastery, and several free chapels. In 1224, the Hospital of St. John and St. Thomas was founded for lepers, and it was operated by the Fordham family. The town is also home to the Royston Town Football Club, also known as the Crows.
The Town House is easy to recognize due to its colorful "four seasons" sidelights and the large center hall. The house has interior and exterior decor representative of the styles of the 1840s and 1860s. Royston was a well-respected statesman, serving as the first state representative for Hempstead County, as well as a congressman in Richmond, Virginia. His political career was also highlighted by being a delegate to two Arkansas Constitution conventions.
